2023 KIA K5 VS 2023 HONDA ACCORD
Is it truly possible for a vehicle to be sporty and affordable? Many companies will try, and so far Kia has found just the right formula in the new 2023 Kia K5. Both engine choices are impeccable, there are almost too many safety features to count, and the fun only continues when you enter the cabin. The new Accord has a decent engine and a couple of desirable interior features, but it didn't quite stand out as much as the new K5.
Performance
We were thrilled to find out that the 2023 Kia K5 offers two very distinct engine options which makes it that much easier for individuals to find a version that best suits their preferences and driving habits, with the standard choice being a very capable 1.6L Turbo complete with 180 horsepower. Considering the fact that the K5 is meant to be a relatively low-price sports car, the standard engine alone is already rather impressive. However, upgrading to the 2.5L Turbo will get you up to 290 horsepower which is definitely something to brag about. On top of that, the K5 is equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission system with a wet dual-clutch available. Yet another perk of going with the K5 is the incredible mileage of 27 in-city and 37 highway miles per gallon.
There are also two powertrain options available for the 2023 Honda Accord, but the differences in power are rather subtle. The standard 1.5L Turbo engine brings you 192 horsepower served on a CVT system which is slightly more than the K5's standard but falls incredibly short of the K5's upgraded 25L Turbo with 290 horsepower. There's no way to meet that energy with the Accord since the only other available option is a hybrid setup only capable of 204 horsepower. Also, the only other driving technology to note in the Accord is a motion management system to help you maintain your grip on the road, but that feature will hardly be missed.
Safety Features
If you were wondering about the number of safety features in the new K5, you get 9 standards with some room to add additional technology for greater protection. Standard features include:
- Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection
- Driver Attention Warning with Leading Vehicle Departure Alert
- Lane Keeping Assist
- Lane Following Assist
- Rear View Monitor
- Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
- Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
- Rear Occupant Alert
- Safe Exit Assist
This is already a substantial list of features that come with the K5 on its own, but you can also add extra tech like Park Distance Warning, Surround View Monitor, Highway Driving Assist, and Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go. We highly recommend Highway Driving Assist because it turns the stressful and tedious task of traversing the freeway into an easier experience. But focusing our attention on the new Accord, you simply get a handful of basic features like a blind spot information system, rearview camera, parking sensors, and braking mitigation.
Interior
The K5 already carries a sporty aura about it with its striking external design, but there's more to amaze you as you step into the cabin. If you go with the GT-Line models, you'll get to enjoy special chairs made with SynTex that are well-bolstered while carrying the enticing GT-Line logo that lets you know you're in for quite the ride. The seats can also be heated, ventilated, power-adjusted, and offer power lumbar support to find your ideal level of comfort. And of course, no sports car is complete without robust speakers and the K5 can support 12 of them in premium Bose quality.
The Accord may be a highly-acclaimed vehicle, but that doesn't change the fact that the cabin only offers the bare minimum. You'll have access to heated and ventilated leather seats, a moonroof, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. However, all of these features spell out a barely upgraded sedan. For a truly sporty experience and to get your money's worth, Kia hit the mark with the K5.
Bottom Line
The new 2023 Honda Accord is great for Honda fans who know what to expect from your typical sedan, but the new 2023 Kia K5 is the better option for those who are looking for more thrills on a budget. For the average sedan price, you could have access to a sporty engine, a sport-inspired cabin, and an above-the-ordinary array of safety features. We encourage you to go the extra mile in treating yourself to the new K5!
